Aveley obtains a grant for a New Community Centre

Aveley Village Community Forum has obtained a grant of nearly £500,000 to create a community centre for the use of everyone.  They received their grant from Reaching Communities in the Big Lottery Funding. It will be called the Aveley Village Information Advice Regeneration and Young People’s Centre and will provide IT training and facilities for all age groups.  Congratulations to them for making the effort and succeeding!

Best Wishes to those who are unwell

Jan has been in hospital for treatment, we do hope that she is making good progress.  Do you remember Ray our milkman?  He had always been part of the community, but unfortunately he has had a stroke and is in St George’s hospital.  We have sent him a card wishing him well.  Colin our window cleaner, hurt his foot but is back on his round, so your windows will be clean again!  Jack from Kent View is under the weather; we send our best wishes to him and Eileen who relies on him so much.

Veolia Planning Application

Although the Secretary of State, John Denham, refused to allow a Public Enquiry into this application for re-contouring the landfill site, there is a chance that a Judicial Review may take place.  This will investigate all aspects of this proposal.

Planting New Hedgerow

At the Annual General Meeting it was agreed that the hedgerow would be reinforced and infill many of the gaps.  The responsibility on the committee for the environment has changed twice since the A.G.M., but hopefully we will be able to appoint someone who is totally experienced in this aspect.  The area of development is to infill the hedgerow, but we will need your help with the planting, so please get your boots ready and sharpen up your spade.

Bullying

Now that the children have settled in at school, do be careful if you feel that your child is unhappy.  Gently question them a little bit at a time, to draw out their concerns.  It was good to hear that possible legal action could be taken, if persistent bullying occurs.  Bullying happens with the older generation too; you would be surprised how many elderly people living alone, can be subjected to such abuse.  If you feel that one of your neighbours is the target of nasty treatment, please let us know and we will investigate.  The other day a lady was delivering leaflets and the owner of the property was nasty to her; considering this was the second time it had happened, it was inexcusable.  We will be monitoring this situation.

Changes in Parliamentary Constituency Boundaries

Our Member of Parliament, James Brokenshire has written to remind us that next year the Constituency Boundaries will change and our area will be joined with Dagenham.

As you may be aware significant changes will take place to the Parliamentary boundaries of the Hornchurch Constituency at the next General Election, expected by May of next year.  The effect of these changes will mean that the current Hornchurch constituency is abolished with the Hylands ward being incorporated into an expanded Romford constituency, the St Andrew’s and Hacton wards being subsumed within an enlarged Upminster constituency and Elm Park, Rainham and Wennington and South Hornchurch wards being incorporated within a modified Dagenham constituency.  Consequently, I will cease to be your MP from next spring.

                                                    James Brokenshire MP

We would like to take this opportunity to thank James for his unstinting support and avid interest in all the issues that have confronted our village and Rainham during his time as our Member of Parliament.  He has been

a tower of strength and we wish him well in the future.

Winter Crime Prevention

As Summer is left behind and autumn fast approaches we get a seasonal change in the way burglars think to gain entry to premises.  Autumn/Winter burglars mainly work in the late afternoon or evening and they are looking for a house in darkness.  It is therefore important to make it look like you are home when you are out. To reduce the risking being burgled, here are a few tips from Havering Police Safer Community Advisors:

Congratulations to Frances on gaining her M.A.

Frances has just obtained her M.A. from Canterbury University.  Her area  of research was film studies and she gained a distinction. Our congratulations go to her.  The family of Blue, Margaret, Vicky and Marcus must be very proud.  What is Frances going to do next?  Study for her Ph.D! A Very enthusiastic girl!

Havering Police Top in London

Havering Police provide the best service to Victims of Crime in London for the second year in a row.  Inspector John Fish from the Citizen Focus Department said that we make sure that the victims of crime receive the best possible service from the Police Service and their partner agencies.  It is good to hear that our Police are successful!

Home from Uni!

The other weekend two students at University came home for the weekend.  Their parents were pleased to see them, but their mothers weren’t too pleased to see the pile of washing!!

Congratulations to Molly

This week the Havering College gave an award to Molly for academic excellence in the business and care sector. This is quite a prestigious award and it was totally unexpected  by all the family.  Molly you have surprised them all!  Congratulations!  Please continue the good work!

Application for The Green to become a Village Green

We are in the process of submitting an application to the Havering Council for The Green to be designated as a Village Green.  This means that we can use the area for all kinds of community activities without having to obtain permission from the authorities.  The application will go in the of name of Jan Hickey, as it was her who came up with the idea.  Several residents have written statements outlining the use of the area over the last 60+ years.  We will update you as things progress.
