Annual General Meeting

This edition of the newsletter is partly based upon the details for the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 24th March 2010.

Break -ins!

Please be careful and lock up your doors, sheds and garages.  We have had a couple of break-ins and tools stolen, so make sure that everything is securely locked.

C.P.R.E.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England is advocating that volunteers are to be employed as litter wardens to clean up the hedgerow.  The group is calling for parish councils, community groups and residents’ associations to nominate someone to undertake the task.  There are financial incentives and specialist gear to facilitate the operation.  Funding has been made available from Keep Britain Tidy.  At present it is being tried out in Norfolk. If you want further information go on the internet www.cprenorfolk.org.uk.

Rubbish Cleared

We would like to thank Kay for clearing the rubbish between East Hall Lane and the Southall Bridge.  This is quite a large area as it extends down the ditch into the fields.  Plenty of community spirit!  Also our thanks to Anita who cleared the area near the Fire Station, where contractors are renewing and strengthening the concrete base for parking heavy vehicles.

Take Care with Your Finances!

Check your bank statements carefully and keep your credit or debit card secure.  I have recently had three problems:  the first was when someone cancelled my new debit card.  I took it in good faith from the bank and it did not work - I had to wait for a fortnight for a new one!  The second instance was when one of my cheques was cancelled, luckily the recipient knew me well enough to know that my credit was good.  The third was when I was charged twice for the same thing!  Please be careful and check your statement, also be discreet in using your credit card on-line.

Our Condolences

Our condolences go to the family of Ron Cobley, who had a massive heart attack whilst in hospital recently.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Dot, Julie, Terry, John, Jack, Harry and Molly.  Ron will be cremated at the Corbets Tey Crematorium on Friday 19th March.

We also send our condolences to Ivy Griffiths’ family, Irene, Mark, Mary, Siddy, James, Samantha, David and the little girls.  Ivy died at the age of 91 and had been living in a home for a little while.  Together with Ted, Ivy had been part of the old establishment in the village.  They moved into Kent View having joined the Seven Kings Self - Build Group, who built the whole of Kent View.

It is sad to lose two residents, especially when they live next door.  Someone has said that Ron will be holding Ivy’s hand up there; he always showed care and concern for others.

General Election and Ward Elections

It appears that the date of the Election could be May 6th.  Things will be different for us this year as we are now in the Rainham and Dagenham constituency.  We will have two voting cards, one from Havering for the Ward Elections (Local Councillors) and one from Dagenham & Rainham for the Parliamentary Election.  Please don’t forget that if you want a postal vote, you ought to be quick to phone Electoral Services.

Raffle Rules

Recently I read about the rules for running raffles.  Apparently you should only sell raffle tickets on the day of the event  and at the premises where the event is to take place.  The winning tickets must be announced at the event.  Prizes must be donated or if purchased the total cost must not exceed £500.  Alcohol may not be given as a prize to anyone under 18.  If you wish to sell tickets beforehand, you will need to obtain permission from the Licensing team at Havering Council.  The licences begin at £40 per annum.
