Annual General Meeting to be held

on Wednesday 24th March 2010

In consultation with the committee it has been decided to hold our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 24th March.  In 2008 we were unable to hold it until May and then last year we were coerced into having it in February.  Now we are back on track and hopefully should have a successful meeting.  The venue has not been agreed yet, but we will let you know in due time.  There are some changes needed to the Constitution; our President has suggested a few minor alterations and the current situation has created a need for change.  Derek Guyon has suggested that we appoint Trustees who would help with overseeing the administration and monitoring of the association.

You will need to renew your membership to attend the AGM, to vote in your new committee and put your point of view on local affairs.  We really want a fresh approach and would welcome volunteers with drive and enthusiasm, as well as an interest and concern for the community.  Nominations for committee members should be handed to the secretary by 14th March, no nominations will be accepted from the floor.  All nominations must be endorsed by another member.  No one can hold office until they have been a member for one month.

Your subscription is £2.50 and will be collected by your warden or one of the committee.  If you do miss the warden, please put it in an envelope with your name and address on the outside and deliver it to 1a Church Lane.  If you have a topic which you would like to be discussed at the AGM, this must be handed in writing or e-mailed to the secretary by 14th March 2010.

Have you missed your window cleaner?

I spoke to Colin who cleans many of the windows in the village.  He apologised  for the delay in getting around to your house, but the snow caused quite a problem.  I don’t like climbing ladders, so you can imagine what it is like with slushy snow on the ground!  Colin will be around to you as soon as possible, so please be patient.

Rainham Horticultural Society

The subscription for the Horticultural Society is now due in April, as their committee decided that the weather could be too hazardous for the collectors in January and February.  The amount is still £1.  The first show for 2010 is on Saturday 3rd April which is Easter Saturday.  This is the Daffodil Show, when you can see some exquisite daffodils from avid growers.  The venue is the Methodist Hall in Wennington Road.

Marion formerly from the Parish Office

Marion wishes to thank everyone for the card and present given to her on leaving her post last week.  She has gone to a retreat for a week and then will be back to resume work in pastures new.

Best wishes to our friends who are ill

Perhaps the warmer weather will encourage our friends to get out and about.  We send our best wishes to Ivy, Olive, Jack & Eileen, Jan, Carole, and Gary.  We are pleased that Lynn’s plaster is off and Terry isn’t in any danger!  We are sorry to hear that Bob Relf has broken his shoulder, so we send our best wishes to him and we thank the friends and neighbours who are supporting him and Elsie.

Electoral Register

You will have received the notification of your inclusion in the Electoral Register this week.  If the details are not accurate, please contact the Election Services at the Town Hall on 01708 432 444 or 432 445.  However should you wish to have a postal vote instead of going to Brady School to vote, you can ask for a form from this office.

Postal Collection time to change

The collection times from the little post box on The Green are to change; they used to be about 5.15pm, but will now be at 4.30pm.  So please remember the change in time.

A Gift of a Little Boy

We send our congratulations to Keith and Georgina on the birth of their son Austin, who arrived two months early last week.  He weighed just over six pounds.  I am assured that he will be playing rugby not football.

(actually I saw the whole family as they were taking Austin home from the hospital and everyone looked really well).

A Brave Soldier

A young twenty year old soldier is on his way back to Afghanistan after a couple of weeks home with his family. Gary, one of twins, has spent some time as a gunner in action in Afghanistan.  This weekend family and friends had their belated Christmas dinner prior to Gary’s departure for further action.  We send our best wishes for a safe tour of duty.

Kay’s Gardening Corner

Time to start off the seed potatoes!  If you have an egg box or egg tray, this is ideal to rest the potatoes in for chitting (that is exposing them to light to make them go  green and start to sprout).  Anyone can grow a few spuds, you don’t need a vegetable patch.  Most kinds of containers or 12” diameter pot with drainage holes will do.  Plant up to the end of March/beginning of April and leave outside.  If the weather is likely to be frosty and they have some green leaves, cover them with newspaper at night and remove it in the morning.  When they have flowered and died down, tip the pot out and you should have a few new potatoes; they will taste great - much better than those from the supermarket.
